Eau de Parfum

“Perfume is the art that makes memory speak,” goes a famous saying. When we take a whiff of something fragrant, it evokes certain memories, of places, or of people: significant scents which we associate with certain events or a period in our lives. Thus, putting on the right perfume, which we definitely choose based on our personal preference, makes all the difference. Fragrance, which denotes something smelling really pleasant and great, refers to the different kinds: true perfume (sometimes called extrait), eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne, or eau fraîche.

The different types of fragrances are defined by the amount of perfume concentrate in each. Eau de parfum has about 15 to 20% perfume oil, following second to true perfume which contains the highest perfume oil concentration at 22-30%. Eau de parfum, which is French for “perfume water”, is composed of 15% perfume oil plus 85% pure alcohol and distilled water. The scent of eau de parfum can last from four to five hours. The alcohol content is low enough such that it doesn’t irritate the skin. It is strong and intense but light enough not to overwhelm the person next to you, nor would the scent fill up an entire elevator and irritate the noses of the persons with you. The scent of an eau de parfum remains until the end of the day, thus it is perfect for those special events or parties lasting into the night.

The best and effective way to wear eau de parfum is by putting it directly on your skin, on the areas that are exposed to the air, such as the pulse points on your neck, on your wrists, or inner elbows. It is better also to apply eau de parfum on rather light damp skin, instead of on dry skin. It will also be more effective to do “layering” by using the same fragrance of your body oil, body lotion, or body butter, so as to achieve a consistent and lasting scent. You can put on eau de parfum indirectly by spraying it in the air and walking into the mist; that way, you’ll just get a hint of the fragrance.

Brooklyn Perfume Company has a wide array of eaux de parfum. There are seven scents: Magnolia, Green Iris, Amber, Sandalwood, Ambergris, Musk and Oud.
